Physiowise was established in 1988 and since then the practice has developed a reputation for high standards, particularly in the treatment of neck and low back pain.
Our aim is for you to be able to return to your normal usual activities as soon as possible, using a “hands-on” and holistic approach to healthcare.
With our individual areas of expertise we are able to offer an integrated approach in a relaxed environment with a wide range of conditions from a sprained ankle to whiplash and lower back pain, headaches and tennis elbow and injury following illness, trauma or surgery.
Spinal Pain
This may not manifest itself simply as localised symptoms in the neck or in the lower back, but can be referred elsewhere causing headaches, sciatica, trapped nerves affecting the arms and legs, and pins and needles.
Symptoms can be caused by a variety of reasons, including whiplash injuries, disc trauma or poor posture.
Most people respond well to joint mobilisations, exercise programmes improving core strength in particular. Acupuncture is also used for pain relief.
Joint Pain
Joint pain may arise from arthritic changes or injury to ligaments or cartilage. Where there has been trauma to a joint affecting the cartilage or ligaments, healing can be aided using physiotherapeutic measures. If surgery is required, post-operative treatment can be carried out, whether it be for soft tissue surgery or following joint replacement e.g. hips and knees.
Often patients are told that nothing can be done to help arthritis. Physiotherapy does not cure the condition but can help considerably with pain relief, flexibility and strengthening through exercise programmes. Also gentle adjustments to improve the alignment of the joint can help, as can acupuncture.
Understanding your condition helps in learning how to manage it better and helps preserve the joints for longer.
Soft Tissue Injuries
Soft tissue injuries are not restricted to sports injuries. Anyone can sprain their ankle or develop tendonitis. Rest/non-aggravation of the injury plus cold or heat together with gentle exercise will settle most injuries down.
Sometimes more than first aid is required and appropriate treatment and rehabilitation will increase the rate of recovery. Tendonitis in particular has a slow recovery and will benefit from early intervention.
Long – Covid
“Long – COVID is a term to describe the ill-health experiences following exposure to the Coronavirus.”
Rehabilitation is historically part of physiotherapy services and Chartered Physiotherapists are well placed to deliver the appropriate care for treating the common Long – COVID symptoms. : headaches, musculoskeletal weakness and pain.
In addition, the respiratory difficulties felt often lead to dysfunctional breathing patterns. These patterns are not necessarily related to lung pathology alone but have a recognized association with anxiety, panic attacks and chest pain. Learning breathing techniques will not only help with improving lung function but also help focus the mind helping to alleviate stress-related issues. Acupuncture can also be used in conjunction with these conventional treatments.
Chest pain, anxiety, and panic attacks are distressing and can be helped with breathing practices, relaxation and Mindfulness approaches. Again, acupuncture is known to be beneficial with such conditions.
Fatigue needs to be managed carefully. Long – COVID is not a condition to push through. Therefore, activity, whether functional or a prescribed exercise programme is carried out in bite-sized pieces and punctuated with regular rest periods. This allows the body to recover and ‘recharge’. As the body is already depleted in energy it makes sense not to deplete it further by pushing it unnecessarily. In this way, physical exercise tolerance is built up safely and steadily.
